Victor Orlov was born in 1980.
After graduation from St. Petersburg Polytechnic University with a degree in Material Science and Technology of Advanced Materials he was employed by the Federal State Unitary Enterprise “Central Research Institute of Structural Materials “PROMETEY”.
Prior to joining the scientific domain he worked in the manufacturing of shaped castings of non-ferrous alloys at the sections of manual molding, vacuum molding and casthouse production.
In 2007 he defended his Ph.D. thesis on development of chemical composition and manufacturing technology of low-alloy steels for shipbuilding, which ensured the construction of a series of multi-purpose platforms Moss Maritime at JSCo “PO “Sevmash”and the terminals of Varandey deposit. In 2011 Victor Orlov defended his doctoral thesis on formulation of scientific principles for development of new high-strength steels for large diameter oil-and-gas pipes and advanced energy-saving technologies for their production.
In 2002–2010 at PAO SEVERSTAL Victor Orlov carried out the works on development and implementation of new for native industry technologies of thermo-mechanical hardening making it possible to decrease the alloying level of steel, increase weldability and operational characteristics of flat rolled steel. Thus, the new materials were provided for the construction of marine off-shore machinery (Arkticheskaya jack-up rig constructed by Shiprepairing Center “Zvyozdochka”, Varandey deposit off-loading terminal, a series of Moss Maritime platforms constructed by JSCo “PO “Sevmash” ordered by Norway etc.).
Under his management OJSC "Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works" developed end-to-end technologies for manufacturing of sheet steel for shipbuilding and large diameter pipes at the new automated complex Rolling Mill 5000. On the basis of competitive bidding OJSC "Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works" received the order and implemented the works in full scope and within the shortest possible time, and, as result, became one of the leading manufacturers of high quality shipbuilding plates and the second national supplier of rolled tubes for Bovanenkovo - Ukhta Main Gas Pipeline strategic system with unique parameters. New technologies ensured reduction of the process cycle up to 60%, and the production cost of flat rolled products by another 10-15%.
15 Master theses and 2 Ph.D. theses were defended under his supervision. Victor Orlov is the author of over 100 scientific papers and 12 patents. Total number of citations in the Russian Science Citation Index database is 210, and over the last 5 years it is 87, Hirsch index (RSCI) is 11, the number of publications over the last 5 years is 35.
He is a member of the President of Russia’s Council on Science and Education (2012 – 2015).
